What is System Mechanic and what does it do?
iolo's System Mechanic is a Windows PC optimization tool that helps improve speed, stability, and overall performance. It removes junk files, optimizes startup programs, repairs common system issues, and helps keep your computer running smoothly with automated maintenance.
Is System Mechanic safe to use?
System Mechanic is developed by iolo and has been used by millions of Windows users worldwide. It focuses on maintenance and optimization tasks such as cleaning temporary files, managing startup items, and repairing system settings. It does not replace antivirus software, but it works alongside Windows security features.
What are the system requirements for using System Mechanic or System Mechanic Ultimate Defense?
A user must meet the following minimum system requirements to successfully install & use System Mechanic:
- PC computer
- Microsoft Windows 7 or higher
- 512 MB RAM or higher (optimal 2GB)
- At least 100 MB of hard disk space
- Windows Administrator user account
An internet connection is required for activation and updates.Does System Mechanic work on Mac or mobile devices?
No. System Mechanic is designed exclusively for Windows PCs and does not support macOS, smartphones, or tablets.
Is System Mechanic or System Mechanic Ultimate Defense Compatible with ARM PCs?
At this time System Mechanic and System Mechanic Ultimate Defense are only compatible with Windows® x64 and x86-based (64/32-bit) PC’s, and not ARM-based PC’s.
How many PCs can I install the software on?

Will System Mechanic actually make my PC faster?
Yes. Over time, Windows PCs accumulate clutter, background processes, and unnecessary startup programs that slow performance. iolo's System Mechanic is designed to identify and reduce these issues, which can result in faster boot times, improved responsiveness, and better overall system performance.
How often should I run System Mechanic?
System Mechanic can be run manually at any time, but it also includes automated maintenance features that work in the background when your PC is idle. Many users leave these features enabled so their system stays optimized without needing to remember to run scans.
Why am I receiving a “Conflicting Product Detected” error?
Users may receive this error if their machine already has one of iolo’s System Mechanic products. Navigate to Apps & Features within Settings if you are using Windows 11 or Control Panel if you are using Windows 10 or below. Locate the referenced conflicting program and uninstall it if you wish to continue with the installation of System Mechanic or System Mechanic Ultimate Defense. After uninstalling the conflicting software try install System Mechanic again.
What if I don’t see noticeable improvements after optimizing my PC?
System Mechanic is designed to improve performance by addressing common inefficiencies such as fragmented drives, accumulated junk and internet files, and unnecessary programs at start up. We recommend you restart your PC to ensure all optimizations are fully applied and to give the system a clean start. You are welcome to contact us by email or to submit a ticket. Support technicians can diagnose your computer and verify the operating system, drivers, and installed applications are up to date. They can also check for malware or viruses by running a full antivirus scan, as malicious software can degrade system speed.
Will System Mechanic remove my personal files?
No. System Mechanic is designed to clean unnecessary system files, temporary data, and performance-related clutter. It does not delete personal documents, photos, or files unless explicitly instructed through advanced tools.
